The Islamic world did not emerge in a vacuum. Islam as a religion and the Islamic Caliphate only make sense in the broader setting of the Near East. Rather than starting with Muhammad and the formation of the community, then, we will start with the two main empires: the Byzantine Empire in the eastern Mediterranean and the Sasanian Empire in the Iranian cultural sphere.
